Nowadays, PDF files are widely used by almost every computer user. Every software product documentation comes in PDF format and that's because it's easier to read than other formats, takes up little hard disk space, it cannot be modified or altered and, best of all, requires only a small application for viewing it. Thus, Adobe has released a software named Reader for viewing PDF files. Unfortunately, when we are talking about creating or modifying PDF files, things get complicated. Programs that allow the creation of PDF files are generally few, lack a lot of options and they are expensive. An example would be Adobe Acrobat, which is the most widely used software for manipulating PDF files, but, in spite of this, it has its drawbacks. It's expensive, it takes up a lot of system resources and it's very difficult to be mastered by beginners. A much better choice for creating PDF files would be pdfMachine.

This software is basically a virtual printer that allows creating PDF files from virtually any application that supports the printing feature. The software is a Windows application and can be installed on most versions of this operating system, ranging from XP to Windows 7. It has a simple installation process that can be completed by anyone.

Because the program is actually a virtual printer, it doesn't have an actual interface. PDF files can be created just by using the Print feature in the desired software. Doing this will pop out a configuration window in which the PDF file can be previewed before it is actually saved. Furthermore, there are a lot of settings available for modifying the quality of the PDF file and also for adding a watermark and owner information. For making them inaccessible for unauthorized users, PDFs can be protected with a password.

PDF documents can be directly sent through email without requiring saving them first, thus saving a lot of time and effort.

Pros

It acts as a virtual printer, allowing the user to create PDF files from virtually any application that supports the printing feature. Besides that, it includes a lot of settings, for customizing the quality of PDF files and also for protecting them with a password. Furthermore, PDFs can be previewed and sent as an email attachment prior to saving them.

Cons

The program doesn't offer an option for batch converting PDF files. pdfMachine is a great software for creating PDF files from virtually any application.
